Naval Architect

As the ​Naval Architect​ working for Hepburn and Sons LLC, you will ​lead teams from a variety of specialties for the Unmanned Program Office​ . You will be expected to ​provide analysis on ship hulls and superstructures, study design products and specifications to establish basic characteristics of a ship​.  

This is a contingent position based on award/funding from the customer.

• ​​Provide System Engineering/integration Analysis for platform requirements and associated Weapon Systems and Payloads to include new concept development for the program incorporating system trade-offs and identifying opportunities for future innovative capabilities
• Support development and updates of overarching Test and Evaluation (T&E) strategy and Test Evaluation Management Plan (TEMP)
• Adjudicate comments from reviewers on strategy and plan
• Provide evaluations, analysis, and recommended solutions for Technology Readiness Level (TRL), security evaluations, Certification Test and Evaluation (CT&E), Security Test and Evaluation (ST&E), and Enterprise Applications
• Provide support for development and evaluation of shipyard proposals by participating in RFP requirements- meetings, pre-award surveys, negotiations support, and post award conferences
• Support in the development of Training Materials, Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) documentation and Government Furnished Information (GFI) and support Planning Yard Managers with GFI/GFE management
• Conduct a review and analysis of UxV designs, addressing technical issues that arise during design and construction, and in the development of the future UxV requirements and acquisition documents
• Provide engineering support as requested by the-customer to support technical and project decisions and maintain technical configuration control
• Perform engineering analyses of customer mission and performance requirements to define UxV attributes in engineering terms
• Perform engineering studies leading to the allocation of UxV attributes to UxV systems in terms of design direction, performance, configuration, space and weight, and arrangement
• Perform design and engineering studies to identify the degree of UxV systems integration required to meet the mission requirements
• Provide Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) of designs in the form of technical products such as drawings, conceptual and product engineering designs, calculations, schematics, reports, etc
• Provide technical assistance with UxV design, and integration, related to subject areas including machinery, hull form, hull strength, propulsion, electrical systems, auxiliary systems, hydrodynamics, sea keeping and survivability, stability, structures, arrangements, habitability, outfitting, lifesaving and mooring systems, cargo handling systems, unmanned systems, aviation, C4I, combat systems, autonomy, computer science, electronics and other technical areas as necessary
• Perform review and analysis as requested of the developing design to ensure that the UxV is functionally balanced and integrated in terms of distribution and location of functions, seaworthiness, mission suitability (effectiveness, survivability), and performance
• Identify UxV system characteristics and capabilities of alternative system configurations
• Provide support in technical review and evaluation for systems to support lethality and survivability
• Provide support and reports on casualties and potential impact on UxV readiness and mitigating repair plans
• Review build specifications and provide inputs
• Participate in Production Readiness Reviews, Design Reviews, and other required program reviews
• Conduct UxV systems and UxV design special studies as needed
• Support review and evaluation of industry’s design on UxVs
• Support the Government's review of engineering systems’ technical data, engineering drawings, technical manuals, ILS data, ILS Checklists, and configuration baseline documentation to determine the changes required to update requirements and assist in establishing the new baseline specified by contract, contract specifications, engineering drawings, technical manuals, and specifications
• Provide on-site subject matter expertise in UxV construction and production efforts such as assisting Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), audits, UxV quality assurance testing, and production readiness
• Participate in Planning efforts and Reviews (Production Progress Conference (PPC), and Builder’s Trials)
• Provide support during the UxV Post Delivery Availability (PDA) period including review of Post-Delivery Work Specifications and post-delivery trials cards management
• Develop a small business engagement plan, initially focused on application of the Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) process to solve anticipated UxV challenges and provide innovative capabilities that will reduce cost or increase platform effectiveness (CDRL A004 and A005)

• ​​Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture or Ocean Engineering
• ​​10 or more years of experience in Naval Architecture
• Top Secret DoD clearance 
• Travel 10 % requirement 
• ​Provide analysis on ship hulls and superstructures, study design products and specifications to establish basic characteristics of a ship, such as size, weight, and speed, lead teams from a variety of specialties to oversee building and testing prototypes, evaluate how ships perform during trials, both at dock and at sea, and change designs as needed to make sure national and international standards are met

Preferred:

• 15 years of experience in Naval Architecture
• Experience with DoD/DoN procedures and Policies (DoD 5000 Process)​
